Not a sentence that many Mariners fans would use when describing Ricky Ravenhill. Yet the former Grimsby midfielder could line up against Town this Saturday as the Mariners meet Northampton in the second round of the FA Cup.
Cobblers boss Ady Bothroyd is a fan of the tough tacking loan midfield man and is trying to sign him permanently from Bradford in the January transfer window. But it definitely didn't work out for him at Blundell Park. And for anyone who remembers him, 'wonderful' isn't an adjective they would use.
Ravenhill was signed from Doncaster for the 2006/7 season by Graham Rodger but endured a miserable few months, playing just over a dozen times. When Alan Buckley came in later that season, Ravenhill's face didn't fit and he was shipped off to Darlington, firstly on loan and then permanently. In true 'ex players come back to haunt us' style, Ravenhill scored the winner for Darlo against the Mariners in a match in 2008.
Let's hope he's got that out of his system and doesn't ruin the cup run this Saturday.
